Vedic Astrology: Sun Sign vs Moon Sign — Which One Matters More?
Most people know their Western sun sign. But in Vedic astrology, your Moon sign (Rashi) is far more important. Here's why and how to find yours.
Sun Sign vs Moon Sign — The Key Difference
In Western astrology, your sun sign — determined by where the Sun was on your birthday — is the primary identifier. "I'm a Virgo" means the Sun was in Virgo when you were born.
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Moon sign (Rashi) is considered far more important. The Moon changes signs every 2.5 days and represents your mind, emotions, and inner world — which Vedic astrology considers more revealing of character than the Sun's position.
Why Vedic Astrology Prioritises the Moon
Vedic philosophy teaches that the mind (ruled by the Moon) is the instrument through which we experience life. The Sun represents the soul and external identity, but the Moon governs day-to-day experience, emotional responses, relationships, and karmic patterns. Daily horoscopes in India (Rashifal) are traditionally given by Moon sign, not Sun sign.
The Tropical vs Sidereal Zodiac
Another key difference: Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons), while Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (based on actual star positions). Due to the precession of Earth's axis, these two zodiacs are currently about 23-24 degrees apart — which is why your Vedic sun sign is often one sign behind your Western sun sign.
Someone who is a Western Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) is often a Vedic Leo — because the sidereal Leo extends to approximately Sep 16.
Which Should You Use?
